Just a quick stab at the blog: a recommended read for those who pause and wonder about sexism and nerds, specifically within the fantasy genre. The comments are interesting, my favourite being Stephen Eldridge's.
To make a point... Have you ever been to a movie that you found was beautifully shot and had quite possibly the best characterization and storyline you've come across in a long while? Very likely. Now how often has someone brayed that they hated said film and found it vacuous and unappealing? I suspect it's often a case of getting out of a film/book/photo, etc, what you have within you to add/derive in relation to said work. Take what preconceived beliefs and attitudes with you and often as not there you are in everything around you.
Lesson 1 in my first social anthropology lecture at university: you can never remove yourself from the interpretation equation.

I've decided to start up a basic blog on this site since I ruthlessly killed off my LiveJournal blog, my Facebook page, and my Twitter account. Despite varied wailings from friends to the contrary I stand by my view that Facebook's on the way out, and it's only useful to those who have a lot of social activities and long lost friends in far away places. I'm not that social and my friends know how to use email. Facebook, we don't need you. Twitter, to be blunt, seems only useful if you're perpetually online. I'm not. I'm only online during work hours and most of the time I'm too busy to look at tweets. I'm also too mean to hook my cellphone up to the net. Twitter, you're useless to me. 'Nuff said.
I've thrown together some photos, truly awful panoramic photos from the top of a local hill (blaming not the photographer here but my old Nokia N95 cell phone and Photoshop's feeble automated montage attempts). Winter, frosty and still, view that goes on for... uh, a very long way. Methinks it's time to haul out Google Earth and work out how far I actually could see... from Mount Cargill, Otago, NZ, the photos see as far as 38.5km north and 45km to the south.

A few more photos have been added to the Photos page. They're 2010-2011 snaps (slightly low quality as they were taken with the N95) from around Dunedin, NZ.
